Obituary

Marvin Lloyd Smith, “Pud,” short for pudding, given to him by his sister and how he was known to small town country folks who knew him when he was young, passed away peacefully Saturday, October 10, 2026, at his home in Neosho, Missouri at the age of 93. He leaves behind a wife and family that loved him and will miss him dearly.

Marvin was born in Lone Grove, Oklahoma on February 7, 1933. He skipped second grade and graduated valedictorian in high school at the age of 17. He played on the school basketball team and in his senior year helped them win the District Championship as their third highest scoring player. Wanting to excel quickly, he began college three days after his high school graduation. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Education in 2 ½ years at Southeastern State Teachers College (now Southeastern Oklahoma State University), graduating at the age of 19.

While in College, he met Freda, the love of his life, in church. They married on Valentine’s Day, 1953 and he began his career teaching while he earned his master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma.

Marvin had a long and very successful career in multiple management roles for JCPenney, Gipson’s Discount Stores, and ALCO. The family has forgotten how many moves were involved, but will never forget all the fantastic vacations which he spent all year planning!

Marvin is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Freda (Brumley), son Farand, daughter Marvena Shriver, and son Nansen; along with five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur H. and Clara Mae (Yates) Smith, his sister Geraldine Collier, and his brother Roy.

The family would like to thank the staff of Gentiva Hospice for the professional and personal care they provided to Marvin and his family.

Interment will be at the Neosho IOOF City Cemetery.
