Obituary

Melanie Nicole Smith, a beloved member of the Neosho community, departed from this world suddenly on February 18, 2024. Born on November 21, 1985, Melanie was a vibrant soul who touched the lives of many with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family, education, and community. A proud graduate of Neosho High School Class of 2004, Melanie valued education and pursued further learning at Missouri Southern State University, where she earned her Master's degree. Her passion for helping others led her to a fulfilling career as a physical therapist assistant, where she served at Mercy Hospital and Freeman Health and Rehab. More recently, Melanie embraced her passion for education as a STEAM teacher at South School in Neosho, where she nurtured young minds with her enthusiasm and dedication.

Melanie was not only committed to her professional endeavors but was also deeply involved in her community. She was a proud member of the Neosho Booster Club, a dedicated cheer coach at Neosho Junior High School, and served on the board for the Neosho ball fields, where she tirelessly supported local sports teams. A fervent Chief's fan, Melanie's enthusiasm for sports knew no bounds, and she cheered on Neosho's teams with unwavering spirit.

However, Melanie's greatest joy in life was her role as a devoted mom and loving wife. Her children, Hailey and Owen Smith were her pride and joy, and she cherished every moment spent with them, capturing precious memories with her camera and creating lasting bonds through family trips, especially to the beaches of Destin. Melanie's infectious laughter and radiant smile brightened the lives of those around her, and her positive energy and creativity shone through in her passion for remodeling and DIY projects, where she fearlessly tackled new challenges to create a beautiful home for her family. She also loved creating beautiful celebrations that brought joy to others.

On July 10, 2010, Melanie married the love of her life, Kevin Smith, in Joplin, MO, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. In addition to her husband and children, Melanie is survived by her sister, Amanda Hunter, nieces and nephews Aiden, Kaden, and Jaxson, her grandpa Butch Alberty, aunts Paula Stuckman and Stephanie Jones, cousins Brandon Alberty and MeChele Burk, mother and father-in-law Susan and Denny LaBantschnig, brother-in-law Michael Smith and fiancée Erin Crandall, along with his children Gabe, Maddox, and Anna-Cate, and a host of dear friends who adored her.

Melanie is preceded in death by her mother, Edwina Alberty, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness that will forever be remembered by those who were fortunate enough to know her.

A memorial visitation to celebrate Melanie's life will be held from 2:00 - 5:00 PM on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at Clark Funeral Home in Neosho.
